Police said a BJD leader and two other people died in a suspected fire on Friday in their house in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
He said that Bijapur leader Alekh Chaudhary (69), former chairman of Barhampur Central Cooperative Bank Limited, was sleeping at home in Gossinuagaon when an air-conditioner caught fire due to an electric circuit in the early hours, They said.
A senior police official said the victims trapped inside the smoke-filled house were rescued and taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
He said everyone suspected that the death had occurred because the smoke from the fire had engulfed the house.
Apart from Mr. Chaudhary, two others were identified as his brother-in-law Bhagban Patra (85) and caretaker Sunil Behera (19).
An official of the fire department said that the exact cause of the fire would be investigated.
Mr. Chaudhary was also the former Chairman of Ganjam District Congress Committee. He contested the state assembly elections thrice from Berhampur and Aska but lost.
He joined the BJD before the 2014 elections.
